Dowsing,
in general terms, is the art of finding hidden things,
usually, with the aid of a dowsing stick, rods or a
pendulum. It is also known as divining, water witching,
doodle-bugging and myriad other names. Dowsing is a
faculty which is employed with intent to expand the
perceptive abilities of its practitioner beyond the
limitations of the three-dimensional world.
Dowsing is a most
ancient, varied craft, as ancient and varied as humanity itself. It has roots,
often shadowy, among all manner of peoples, lands and epochs. It is such an
ancient practice that its origins are lost. It is thought to date back at least
8,000 years. Wall murals, estimated to be about 8,000 years old, discovered in
the Tassili Caves of North Africa, depict tribesmen surrounding a man with a
forked stick, possibly dowsing for water. Artwork from ancient China and Egypt
seem to show people using forked tools in what might have been dowsing
activities. Dowsing may have been mentioned in the Bible, although not by name,
when Moses and Aaron used a "rod" to locate water.
Various wall
paintings, manuscripts and sacred sites themselves tell us that dowsing was
practiced in ancient times. It was apparently well accepted in Europe when
this country was being discovered. Sixteenth and seventeenth century treatises,
as well as old coins, depict a dowser at work. In the Bergbau Museum at Bochum,
West Germany, there is an eighteenth century Meissen figurine of a dowser in the
uniform of a miner, holding a forked stick.
Dowsing skills came with
the colonists to the new world and were the means of locating the dug wells over
which, for safety's sake as well as convenience, many of the early houses were
built.
Dowsing is used in modern
times for any number of purposes. In many areas of the US and other
countries "water witches" or those who dowse for water are often used to find
underground water for wells - some oil companies still have dowsers on staff,
even with all of
the modern technology for finding underground oil and gas deposits.
Dowsing has experienced an
enormous resurgence in the last few years as pendulums and other dowsing tools
have become more mainstream. There uses are as varied as there are people
- divination, energy bodywork, find "things" that are lost, map dowsing, and
much, much more.
Rev. Wendi learned to dowse
as a very young child from her grandfather who was well known for his abilities
to dowse for water and underground utilities. She has continued to use the
dowsing techniques she learned throughout the years and has taught several "in
person" dowsing classes.
